Valentine Bowling Club Weddings: A Photographer’s Venue Guide

Valentine Bowling Club sits in the lakeside suburb of Valentine on Lake Macquarie, a short stroll from the water. It's a relaxed, friendly local club, and after 20+ years and 1,500+ weddings I can tell you that relaxed is exactly what makes photos look natural. This guide covers what the venue is like, where I take couples for portraits, and how to plan your timeline around the best light.

The venue

The club has a function room that works as a blank canvas, so it suits rustic, boho, coastal or classic styling. Couples bring in florals, fairy lights and timber tables, and there's an in-house kitchen and bar, which keeps the reception simple to plan, whether you choose a sit-down dinner, grazing tables or canapés. The function team are friendly and accommodating, and the whole place has an easy, laid-back feel that puts guests at ease.

Best photo spots

  • The Lake Macquarie foreshore, a short walk away, for open water, jetties and moored boats behind you
  • Quiet grassy stretches by the water for relaxed couple and bridal party portraits
  • Nearby parks and tree-lined paths for softer, greener backdrops
  • The bowling green itself, where barefoot bowls during cocktail hour gives me wonderful candid moments of your guests

Everything is close together, so we get plenty of variety without losing time in the car.

Timing and light

The lakeside light is at its best in the hour before sunset, when the water glows and the sky over the lake can turn gold and pink. I recommend planning a short portrait session in that window, even if it's just fifteen minutes slipped away from the reception. On cloudy days the water still gives soft, even light that flatters everyone.

Planning tips

  • Check the sunset time for your date and build your timeline around it
  • Ask the club about an outdoor ceremony or festoon-lit dance floor if you'd like one
  • Consider barefoot bowls as an icebreaker between the ceremony and reception
  • Have a calm-weather and a windy-weather plan for foreshore portraits
