Caves Beach Weddings & Elopements: A Photographer’s Guide
Caves Beach is on the Lake Macquarie coast, and it's one of my favourite places for small beach ceremonies, elopements and portraits. You get soft sand and dunes, rolling surf, rock shelves and, best of all, the sea caves that give the beach its name. With 20+ years and 1,500+ weddings behind me, I can say few locations give you this much variety within a short walk.

The setting
Behind the beach, grassy dunes and coastal scrub frame the sand, with sandy tracks winding through to the beach. Sandstone rock shelves and caves create rich, earthy textures, a lovely contrast to the bright beach outside. It suits intimate celebrations beautifully: a celebrant, your closest people, and nothing but ocean in the background. - The open sand in front of the dunes for a simple ceremony with the surf behind
- The sea caves, where the light falls softly and the rock walls glow warm and textured
- Cave openings looking out to the ocean for framed silhouettes
- The rock shelves and rock pools for playful moments in the shallows
- The shaded coastal trees above the beach for relaxed family portraits
Timing and light
Sun on open sand can be bright, so the caves become your best friend in the middle of the day, giving soft, flattering light. Late afternoon brings warmer tones on the beach. Many elopements here need only about an hour, which is plenty for the ceremony, family portraits and time in the caves and waves.
Planning tips
- Check the tide times: the caves and rock shelves are best explored at low tide
- Wear footwear you can easily slip off, and expect wet hems if you head into the shallows
- Keep the guest list small so the ceremony stays relaxed and personal
- Check whether your ceremony needs a council permit well ahead of time
- Include children and family; some of the most joyful images come from those moments
