Peterson House is one of those venues where the whole day happens within a few minutes' walk: a sandstone chapel, a glass marquee looking over the vines, a lake with a little timber jetty, and room to breathe in between. I've photographed well over 30 Peterson House weddings, and I'm proud to be a preferred photographer here. As a Hunter Valley wedding photographer, it's still one of my favourite places to work.

This guide is the practical version: where you can say your vows, what happens if it rains, when the light is best through the year, and the spots I use for portraits. My style is candid and relaxed, so most of it is about giving you time and room to just be together.

Peterson House at a glance

  • Where: Corner of Broke Road and Wine Country Drive, Pokolbin NSW 2320, in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country.
  • Ceremony spots: The Chapel (seating for your whole guest list, air-conditioned), Front of Chapel (seats 40) and By the Vines (seats 36).
  • Receptions: the Glass Marquee (up to 300 guests), the Chapel "flipped" after the ceremony (up to 120), or the House (up to 80).
  • Earliest ceremony: 2:30pm in the Chapel, 4:30pm By the Vines. Minimum 50 guests.
  • Best light: the last 45–60 minutes before sunset, at the lake and jetty. Sunset is about 8pm in midsummer and just before 5pm in midwinter.
  • Wet-weather plan: outdoor ceremonies move into the Chapel, and the Glass Marquee is fully indoors.
  • Travel: no travel fee. The Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and Newcastle are all included.

Ceremony spots at Peterson House

The Chapel. You walk in through big timber doors under soaring handcrafted trusses and a chandelier. It's air-conditioned, which matters more than you'd think in a Hunter January. The light inside is soft and even, so I can stay quiet at the back and along the side and let the ceremony unfold without hovering. The view back over your guests as you turn around is one of my favourite frames of the day.

Front of Chapel. Here you marry outside with the sandstone wall and arched timber doors behind you. It's bright and open, and the stone throws a warm, flattering light back onto faces in the afternoon.

By the Vines. The greener option, with vineyard views and a relaxed, garden-party feel. Because the earliest start is 4:30pm, it naturally lines up with softer afternoon light for most of the year.

Wet-weather plan

Rain at Peterson House isn't the end of the world. It just changes the order of things. If you've booked By the Vines or Front of Chapel and the weather turns, your ceremony moves inside into the Chapel, and the Glass Marquee keeps your reception dry and comfortable whatever happens outside.

For photos, the chapel porch is covered and framed by sandstone and timber. The empty chapel after guests have moved on is lovely and quiet for portraits, and the marquee's floor-to-ceiling glass gives soft window light with the vines behind. If the rain eases, I'll grab umbrellas and steal you outside for ten minutes. Tell guests to bring a jacket and sensible shoes for the gravel, and everyone stays happy.

Sunset and golden hour at Peterson House

Golden-hour portraits work best in the last 45–60 minutes before sunset, and I plan about 15 minutes there. Approximate sunset times in Pokolbin:

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): about 7:45–8:05pm
  • Autumn: about 7:15pm in March, falling to about 5pm by May
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): about 4:55–5:25pm
  • Spring: about 5:45pm in September, then about 7:05–7:35pm after the clocks change

Check the exact time for your date. Daylight saving moves it by an hour in early April and early October.

One thing for winter: By the Vines can't start before 4:30pm, and in June the sun is down by about five. If you love the vines and you're marrying between May and August, we'll do portraits before the ceremony or lean into the blue hour afterwards. Both look beautiful here.

My favourite photo spots at Peterson House

  • The chapel porch and doors. Straight after the ceremony, the porch gives you shade, texture and a frame. If there's a breeze, a veil here can do something beautiful.
  • The lake and timber jetty. A short walk from the chapel, this is my go-to for golden hour. The water reflects the sky and the pavilion, and the jetty gives you somewhere to stand, sit or wander while I hang back.
  • Arrivals out the front. Vintage cars and the odd horse and carriage look great on the gravel drive against the chapel, so give yourselves a couple of unhurried minutes when you step out.
  • The chapel at night. Once it's dark, the sandstone glows. Five minutes outside during the reception is all we need for a night portrait.
  • Vineyards nearby. On some Peterson House days we slip out to vineyard spots about five minutes away for sweeping views across the valley to the ranges. It's optional, and only if your timeline has room.

Mid-March, Package One (5 hours), sunset about 7:13pm. I'd start with getting ready at 2:45pm, then the ceremony in the Chapel at 4:45pm and family photos from 5:15 to 5:35pm, close to the chapel. While your guests enjoy canapés at the Chapel Bar or on the Canapé Deck, we do relaxed portraits, then golden hour at the lake around 6:15–6:45pm. After your reception entrance, coverage finishes at about 7:45pm. In winter, move the ceremony to about 2:30–3pm.

Your reception and how I photograph it

Most couples celebrate in the Glass Marquee. It's permanent and air-conditioned, styled with fairy lights, draping and chandeliers, and its glass doors open to the vines. In photos that means lovely natural light early in the night, then a warm glow once the chandeliers take over. In winter the venue can add a fire pit at the marquee, which is great for candid guest photos.

For a smaller dinner, the venue can flip the Chapel into a reception room while you're off having portraits. Walking back into the chapel you married in, now set for dinner, is a moment worth photographing.
